Sample Projects

I have chosen the following projects to exemplify the professional skills I have acquired at Stockton College. It is crucial that I have a multifaceted set of skills in the field I plan to work in. These projects have taught me skills such as how to work in teams, generate quantitative results on a topic, and creative thinking.

Paper Assignment: What is justice?
During my sophomore year at Stockton, I took a course called Introduction to Political Theory. This course was taught by Professor Lucinda Jassel. The course focused on how the following questions have been addressed in the American polity: what is politics; what is justice; and what is human nature? We read and discussed the ideas of great thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates. We contrasted the ideas of these philosophical geniuses and tried to apply them to the world today. We looked at issues of justice in the modern world and would draw upon the view points of Libertarians, Republicans, and Democrats. This course introduced me to the various approaches people have to obtaining justice.

In this paper assignment we were asked to consider our own definition of justice. I was asked to consider what I think needs to be done in order for justice to be obtained. This piece required me to reflect on my own opinions as well as those of other people. This paper allowed me to think critically about justice, a word which is of extreme importance in the United States. Rather then just consider my own thoughts on the matter, this assignment allowed me to broaden my horizons onto other view points that are present in the world. The way you feel about a topic is not always the same as other people feel, which I feel is important to understand especially in the workplace.

Blog Assignment: North East Field Experience

In the summer of 2012, I spent two weeks of June traveling around the North Eastern states of the U.S. for a course called the North East Field Experience. I must say, this course certainly was a great experience. We drove to every state in the North East learning about water, energy, natural resource management and stewardship issues. We camped in multiple State and National parks. Rather than sit in a class room to learn, we visited different facilities every day that related to the course. We met with numerous people in fields such as nuclear energy, sustainable planning, permaculture, food and water conservation and sustainable fishing.  We discussed the impact that urban and agricultural development have on the environment. This course introduced me to many people involved in the field of environmental quality. It also showed me areas of the U.S. I had never seen before. In the end, this course was probably the best, and most influential,  course I have taken as Stockton yet.

Through out the trip we were required to keep a daily journal. We recorded the activities we did and what we learned from each of them. We also wrote of the guest speakers we heard from and what they taught us. At the conclusion of the trip we were to convert our journal entries into an online blog and add additional research to the entries. This project opened my eyes to the world of blogging and how it can be used for education or work purposes. This blog demonstrates my writing skills, as well as my researching capabilities.

Research Assignment: Passenger cars & political voice

I have always had a fascination with public transportation systems. The United States has never quite been up to par with the mass transit systems of other areas, such as Europe. American citizens prefer to have their own vehicles that they can drive where and whenever they please. Unfortunately, this has had a damaging effect on our environment. When I was presented with the oppurtunity in my Political Methodology class to conduct my own research project, I decided to find out the relationship between passenger cars and political voice and accountability. This project required me to reference the 2005 World Bank data sets and enter them into the program (SPSS).

My hypothesis was that the more political voice and accountability a countries population has, the more passenger cars would be present there. Through generating a linger regression between these two variables, I learned the concepts of independent versus dependent variables. I also gained knowledge on how these variables, as well as others in the 2005 World Bank data set, are defined. This project showed me that the way I may personally define a variable is not always how the rest of the world defines it. My findings through this study proved my hypothesis to be true, with a strong linear relationship between my variables. Conducting my own, original research project improved both my quantitative skills and my writing skills. I learned how to conduct my own statistical analysis and then translate my findings into an understandable essay format.
